Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Re-Gel β from application to cure time to long-term care.
About Re-Gel
What is Re-Gel?
Re-Gel is a premium 2-part urethane-based coating designed to molecularly bond with your existing gelcoat. It restores a deep, long-lasting shine on faded fiberglass and delivers advanced UV protection that lasts for years. It's not a wax, polish, or sealant β it's true gelcoat restoration.
How is Re-Gel different from a wax, polish, or ceramic coating?
Waxes, polishes, and ceramics sit on top of the surface and wear off. Re-Gel chemically bonds into the existing gelcoat, becoming part of it. That means no peeling, no yellowing, no monthly reapplication β long-lasting recoat that protects against UV, salt, and oxidation for multiple seasons
Who is Re-Gel for?
Boat owners, RV owners, jet ski owners, and detailers β anyone with a fiberglass surface that's gone chalky, dull, or oxidized. Re-Gel was built to be DIY-friendly, so you don't need professional tools or training to use it.
Is Re-Gel a real restoration or just a temporary fix?
Real restoration. Most products only sit on top of damaged gelcoat. Re-Gel works within it, rebuilding gloss and surface density and chemically bonding into the fiberglass.
Where is Re-Gel made?
Re-Gel is made in the USA.
Application & How to Use
How do I apply Re-Gel?
Every Re-Gel kit includes step-by-step instructions, and we have detailed video tutorials on our YouTube channel. The short version: (1) clean the surface with the included scuff pad and pre-cleaner soap, (2) degrease thoroughly, (3) mix Part 1, Part 2, and the catalyst as directed, then (4) wipe on a fresh, even coat. That's it β no buffer, no spray gun.
Do I need professional tools or experience?
No. Re-Gel is engineered for DIY use. If you can wash and wax a boat, you can apply Re-Gel. There's no sanding, buffing, or spraying involved.
How long does it take to apply?
Most owners finish a 20β30 ft boat in a few hours, depending on prep condition and how oxidized the surface is. Larger RVs and bigger boats take longer, but it's still a one-day job for most people.
Do I have to prep the surface before applying?
Yes β prep matters. Wash and dry the surface thoroughly to remove dirt, salt, and loose oxidation before applying. Use the included pre-cleaner and scuff pad to open up the gelcoat so Re-Gel can bond properly.
Can I apply Re-Gel in direct sunlight?
It's best to apply Re-Gel in the shade or on a cool surface. Hot surfaces and direct sun can cause streaks or flash-dry the product before you can spread it evenly. Early morning or late afternoon is ideal.
What's the ideal temperature to apply Re-Gel?
Apply at roughly 50β77Β°F with low humidity for best results. Hotter than that and the product flashes too quickly; colder than that and cure time gets unpredictable.
How many coats do I need?
One properly applied coat is enough for most surfaces. Severely oxidized or porous gelcoat may benefit from a second coat after the first has set. Don't over-apply β a wet, even coat performs better than a thin one.
Can I apply Re-Gel myself, or do I need an installer?
You can absolutely DIY it β that's what Re-Gel is built for. If you'd rather have a pro do it, we have Certified Re-Gel Installers around the country. You can also apply to become one.
Cure Time & Getting Back in the Water
How long does Re-Gel take to dry to the touch?
Re-Gel is typically dry to the touch within one hour of application under normal conditions (around 70Β°F, low humidity). Cooler or more humid conditions extend that.
How long before I can put my boat back in the water?
Wait 24 hours before the surface gets any water contact (rain, splash, hose-down). You can launch the boat after 4 days of full cure to make sure it's fully bonded and ready for prolonged submersion.
Can it rain on the boat right after I apply Re-Gel?
No β keep the surface dry for at least 24 hours after application. Cover it or store it under shelter if rain is in the forecast.
When can I wash the boat after applying Re-Gel?
Wait at least 4β7 days before doing a full wash. After that, regular soap-and-water washes are fine and won't damage the finish.
How long until Re-Gel is fully cured?
Re-Gel reaches full chemical cure within about 4 days under normal conditions. It can be handled and lightly used sooner, but full hardness and chemical resistance build over that window.
Does temperature or humidity affect cure time?
Yes. Warmer, drier conditions speed cure; cooler or more humid conditions slow it down. If you're applying in marginal conditions, give it extra time before any water exposure.
Surfaces & Compatibility
What surfaces can Re-Gel be used on?
Re-Gel is built for fiberglass gelcoat and is also safe on most 2-part painted surfaces, where it restores shine and adds long-lasting UV protection. While it's not specifically formulated for plastic, glass, or trim, our experience is that it's safe and non-damaging around those areas.
Can I use Re-Gel on my RV?
Yes. Re-Gel works on RV fiberglass exteriors just like it does on boat hulls and decks. It's a popular use case β RVs are often heavily oxidized from sun exposure, and Re-Gel brings back the gloss without buffing.
Will Re-Gel work on a jet ski or PWC?
Yes. Jet skis are fiberglass with gelcoat, so Re-Gel is a great fit. The Mini Kit is sized for jet skis and smaller craft.
Can I use Re-Gel on a painted boat?
Re-Gel is safe on most 2-part painted surfaces and will restore shine and add UV protection, but it was engineered for gelcoat. If your boat has been fully repainted with marine paint, results may vary β test a small area first.
Will Re-Gel work over a previous wax, polish, or ceramic coating?
No β any wax, polish, ceramic, or sealant has to be fully removed before applying Re-Gel. Re-Gel needs a bare, clean, prepped gelcoat to bond into. That's what the pre-cleaner and scuff pads in your kit are for.
Is Re-Gel safe for colored gelcoat or decals?
Yes. Re-Gel enhances colored surfaces and is safe to use around decals and stickers. Most owners apply Re-Gel right over their stickers and decals.
Does Re-Gel work on aluminum, metal trim, or stainless?
Re-Gel is designed for fiberglass gelcoat and painted surfaces, not raw metal. Mask off aluminum trim, stainless, and chrome to keep the lines crisp.
Will Re-Gel work on really severe oxidation or chalking?
Yes β that's exactly what it's built for. The more oxidized the gelcoat, the more dramatic the restoration. Make sure to do thorough prep so Re-Gel can bond down to clean gelcoat.
Can Re-Gel fix scratches, gouges, or cracks?
No. Re-Gel is a restoration coating, not a structural repair. Deep scratches, gouges, and cracks need to be filled and faired with gelcoat repair compound first. Once the surface is smooth, Re-Gel will restore the finish.
Color, Finish & Results
What does Re-Gel actually do to the finish?
It restores deep gloss, rebuilds surface density on chalky or oxidized gelcoat, and lays down a hydrophobic, UV-protective layer. Before-and-after is dramatic β see our Customer Gallery for examples.
Is Re-Gel a color match product?
Re-Gel is a clear restoration system, not a color-match repair product. It brings back the existing color and shine that oxidation has dulled, but it isn't used to repaint or recolor a boat.
Will Re-Gel make my boat look glossy or matte?
Glossy. Re-Gel produces a deep, wet-look gloss finish similar to fresh factory gelcoat.
Can Re-Gel change the color of my boat?
No. Re-Gel restores the original color that's been faded by UV and oxidation. If the underlying gelcoat color is gone, Re-Gel can't change the color β but it will bring back the color that's still there.
Will Re-Gel yellow over time?
No. Re-Gel's urethane formulation is engineered to resist UV yellowing β that's one of the main reasons it outperforms wax-based or basic clear coatings.
Will Re-Gel look wavy or uneven?
Properly applied, Re-Gel goes on smooth and even. Streaks or waviness usually come from applying in direct sun, on a hot surface, or with too little product. Follow the application steps and put the Re-Gel on wet while watching for runs.
Coverage, Kit Sizing & What's Included
Which kit should I buy?
Mini Kit covers boats up to 20 ft and RVs up to 30 ft. Standard Kit covers 20β30 ft boats and RVs up to 40 ft. Pro Kit covers up to 1,200 sq ft (larger boats and RVs). Ultra Kit covers up to 1,600 sq ft for the biggest projects. There's also a Re-Gel Gelcoat Refill if you already have a kit and need more product.
How much surface area does one kit cover?
Roughly: Mini up to 20 ft boats or 30 ft RVs, Standard 20β30 ft boats and 30β40 ft RVs, Pro up to 1,200 sq ft, Ultra up to 1,600 sq ft. If you're between sizes or your boat is heavily oxidized, size up β running out mid-application is the most common avoidable mistake. For most RVs, a Standard Kit will do the job.
What's in the kit?
Each kit includes Part 1 (Re-Gel base), Part 2 (cross-linker), catalyst, pre-wash / pre-cleaner, scuff pads, foam applicator pads, microfiber towels, and step-by-step instructions. Larger kits include more product and supplies. Check the product page for the exact contents of each size.
Do I need to buy anything else to apply it?
Most owners pick up a few extras: nitrile gloves, masking tape (for glass, metal, trim), a quart mixing cup, and a couple of extra microfiber towels. We sell all of those in our Detailing Products section if you want to grab them in one order.
How do I measure how much surface I have?
For boats, multiply length Γ average height of the side you're coating, then add the transom and any deck areas. For RVs, multiply length Γ height per side, then add front cap and rear cap. If you're not sure, contact us at (918) 641-4514 with your boat or RV model and we'll help you size it.
Durability, Maintenance & Reapplication
How long does Re-Gel last?
Re-Gel can last years with proper care, depending on usage, climate, and sun exposure. Boats stored covered or indoors see the longest service life; boats kept on a lift in heavy sun see shorter intervals before any refresh is needed.
How do I maintain my boat after applying Re-Gel?
Wash with a pH-neutral marine soap (our Wash & Wax works great). For extra gloss and protection, you can top with our Gloss Lock final-wipe sealant β it's not required, but it makes maintenance even easier.
Will I need to wax my boat after Re-Gel?
No. One of the big advantages of Re-Gel is that you don't need ongoing wax. We do sell a quality wax that's great if you want extra protection after cure. If you want to add extra slickness, our Gloss Lock spray sealant works well, but it's optional.
Can I reapply Re-Gel down the road?
Yes. When you eventually want to refresh, you can prep the surface and apply another coat just like the first time. Most owners get years of service before any reapplication is needed.
Is Re-Gel saltwater safe?
Yes. Re-Gel is built for marine use and is salt- and UV-resistant. Saltwater boats benefit from routine freshwater rinses to keep the surface clean, but the coating itself is engineered for that environment.
Will Re-Gel protect against UV damage?
Yes β UV protection is one of the core features. Re-Gel's urethane chemistry blocks UV from breaking down the gelcoat underneath, which is what causes chalking and fading in the first place.
Removal & Mistakes
Can Re-Gel be removed if I don't like the result?
Re-Gel is a permanent bonded coating, so it can't simply be wiped off like wax. If something goes wrong with the application (streaks, missed spots), reach out to our support line at (918) 641-4514 and we'll walk you through corrective options.
What if I get streaks or uneven spots?
Streaks usually happen from applying in direct sun, on a hot surface, or with too little product. If you catch it early during application, you can usually adjust your speed and the amount you're applying β common causes are a dry sponge or too-hot surface or ambient temperature. If it's already cured, call our support team and we'll help you plan a fix.
I dripped Re-Gel on my deck, trim, or metal β how do I clean it up?
Wipe it off immediately with a clean rag and acetone or thinner before it cures. Once cured, removal is much harder. That's why we recommend masking off glass, carpet, metal trim, and any non-target surfaces before you start.
Can I sand or buff Re-Gel after it's applied?
Re-Gel is designed to be left alone after application β no buffing required. Re-Gel can be wet sanded and buffed if needed, but aggressive sanding or buffing will compromise the bonded layer. If you have a specific issue, call us first.
Safety, Storage & Handling
Is Re-Gel safe to use at home?
Yes, with normal precautions for a chemical coating product. Use in a well-ventilated area, wear nitrile gloves, a respirator, and eye protection, and avoid prolonged skin contact. See our MSDS for full safety data.
Where can I find the MSDS / safety data sheet?
The MSDS is linked in the footer of getregel.com under Privacy β Terms β MSDS.
Is Re-Gel flammable?
Re-Gel contains solvents and should be handled like other automotive and marine refinishing products β keep away from open flames and heat sources, and store at moderate temperatures. See the MSDS for specifics.
How should I store unopened Re-Gel?
Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, away from heat sources, and away from children. Unopened product will last for a year.
How long does Re-Gel last once it's mixed?
Once mixed with catalyst, Re-Gel has a limited working window β typically you want to apply it within roughly an hour. Don't mix more than you can use in one session.
